Apprentice News - On October 8, 2011 our apprentices and Instructors along with Local #4 President Ken Simone donated their time to work on a 9/11 Memorial in Warren County. Thanks to all who helped. Congratulations to Matt Mclaughin for passing his journeyman level comp. test and completing his apprenticeship. We will start all levels of comp. testing for apprentices on February 11, 2012. January 7, 2012 starts a new year for apprentice related training and any Journeymen who wishes to cross train in any discipline of the trade are welcome. Classes offered to Journeymen in 2012: Full Schedule for Fairfield Bob Alesandro Apprentice Coordinator and Training Director What's going on at IMI? Educated Inspectors Building inspectors all over the country are partnering with IMI to boost their masonry knowledge. IMI helps them demand quality, which means more work for union contractors. In June IMI presented double sessions of its Building Inspectors Masonry-Workshop for the NJ Department of Community Affairs. The program is slated to run double sessions again in the Fall: Bordentown on November 3 and Fairfield on November 17. Green for Green The first sustainable construction training program for masonry contractors just won approval by the U.S. Green Building-Council (USGBC), developer of LEED and the leading source for green building knowledge. IMI's Sustainable Masonry Certification Program (SMCP) is one of the few upper level USGBC courses for contractors. IMI is now working with USGBC New Jersey to tap into green training grants to defray the cost of attending SMCP or seeking LEED Green Associate or Accredited Professional credentials. New Products, New Opportunities Contractors today cannot afford to ignore new ideas. IMI makes it easier, with technical and hands-on information that gets BAC contractors and members comfortable working with new products and applications. One Jersey City project, Van Leer Place, will use a good bit of AAC. In September, the Fairfield Training Center hosts a seminar and hands-on event introducing contractors to American Clay Plaster, a natural interior product with LEED credit potential that competes with paint and drywall. IMI will hold another session for designers. by Stephanie Staub, Director of Marketing International Masonry Institute IMI NJ 2009 newsletter in .pdf format IMI NJ E-news August 2010.pdf |
